Root Canal Therapy

Bespoke General Dentistry ยป Root Canal Therapy

Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry provide a root canal therapy service to patients throughout Glasgow, Edinburgh and Cental Scotland.

Endodontics – known more generally as root canal therapy – is a common dental procedure that involves the cleansing of the internal structure of the tooth (the dental pulp).

This procedure is necessitated when the dental pulp becomes irreversibly damaged due to inflammation or infection. Common causes of this damage are dental decay or trauma to the tooth.

The process involves careful cleaning, shaping, sterilisation and filling of the internal structure of the tooth.

Single Root Endodontics

A filled or decayed tooth with an abscess.
The filling is removed to access the cavity.
The root canals are reamed to remove the tooth nerves.
Gutta-perchas are inserted to fill the root.
These are then cut-off, sealed and the tooth filled.
The abscess will reduce.
A crown may be necessary later.

Multi Root Endodontics

Root treatments on back teeth can be more complicated …
… because they have a number of roots.
The root canals are exposed.
All roots then need to be excavated …
… making sure that the entire tooth nerve is removed.
The cavity is then filled with gutta percha …
… and the tooth then filled.

Root canal therapy in the past has had a poor image and patients often express concern that they have heard that root canal can be unpleasant. Modern endodontics, carried out with state of the art equipment is now a predictable and virtually pain free procedure.

At our clinic our endodontic care is carried out by Ross Henderson, pictured below right, who devotes all his clinical time to carrying out endodontics and he prides himself in providing the highest standards of care to all his patients.

He will spend time with patients discussing any concerns the patient may have concerning any aspect of their endodontic care.

Here at our clinic we have invested heavily in the very best of equipment available. This includes the operating microscope which enables us to see inside your tooth with exceptional magnification and clarity. This greatly enhances the predictability and success of your treatment.

At Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry we have also invested in the most advanced CT scanner available, allowing a 3-D image of your tooth and allowing us to be at the cutting edge of technology in endodontics. It enables us to achieve an unparalleled view of your tooth that we can use in more complex cases. In addition to routine endodontic work, we also undertake more complex re root treatment of teeth, and surgical endodontics such as apicectomy procedures.

We’ve also installed a super powerful microscope which can greatly assist in root canal therapy. The microscope has six levels of magnification are 2.5x, 5x, 10x, 14x, 18x, 22x. It also has a 180 degree inclinable binocular which assists the dentist in achieving greater vision of the tooth being worked on. The photo below shows Ross using the new piece of equipment.
