We attended the prestigious Dentistry Scotland Awards on Friday night at Gleneagles.

We were delighted to secure two of the top accolades from the event – the award for Most Attractive Practice and we were named Best Private Practice.

Our dental implant nurse Kasia was also highly commended in the Most Outstanding Individual category and the Glasgow clinic received the same mention in the Practice of the Year – West category.

All in all a very successful night for Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry here in Glasgow…and a great recognition of the tremendous effort put in by all our team over the last 12 months of our existence.

Congratulations to our colleague Dr Jamie Maguire who has just passed his diploma in conscious sedation.

Dental conscious sedation is a technique whereby a sedative medication is used to relax and sedate patients at our Glasgow dental clinic who are very anxious of receiving dental treatment. We see many patients who are extremely concerned about visits to the dentist and indeed can be phobic about the experience.

Jamie is a key part of our team and enables us to deliver the best possible outcomes by our superb team approach especially for those patients who are apprehensive about treatment. It means they can receive advanced dental care to achieve the optimum in oral health.

I am often asked to make presentations on a number of dental related topics – especially implant work.

I’ve just been in Manchester on a course to help hone my skills in presenting.

The course was run by the impressive Ashley Latter and it was a fantastic day.

Leaves me in good stead for what I see will be a vastly increasing lecture commitment in the coming 18 months.

We’ll be doing many of the courses and seminars in our own Glasgow clinic.

Congratulations to my wife Stephanie who graduated this week after successfully completing her specialist course.

She’s now a specialist paediatric dentist – a tremendous achievement as she completed that qualification while doing her full-time job, supporting and looking after me and, of course, most importantly, being a mum.

Brilliant I’d say.

After the graduation we went out with our respective parents for a celebration meal. Well done Stephanie

This week marks the first anniversary of the opening of the Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry Clinic and, while everyone of us was excited at the challenge of being involved in Phil’s unique venture, I don’t believe anyone – not even the ever optimistic Phil – could have anticipated the remarkable success of those first 12 months.

Phil’s dream was years in the planning and from the start it was impossible not to get caught up in his passion and commitment.

The bold investment in time, energy and money has resulted in a practice of remarkable quality, with no concessions or compromises being made in the single minded pursuit of a vision.

The phone started ringing on day one and has not stopped since.

It strikes me though, that while visitors to the Clinic cannot help but be impressed by the beautiful surroundings and the fantastic equipment, it is the genuine warmth and kindness of the team that really sets the place apart; not only through the  consideration and interest shown to patients but to each other as well.

In my 33 year career I have never worked with a better group of people – there is not a weakness.

We’re absolutely delighted to have been awarded two major accolades in the prestigious Private Dentistry Awards in London.

The clinic was named the UK’s Most Attractive Practice and we were very happy that all the planning and refurbishment work have been recognised with this award.

And we’re also chuffed to have been named Practice of the Year in Scotland – and this is a tremendous achievement for each and every team member.

Headed to the National Motor Cycle Museum in Birmingham on Monday for the inaugural meeting of a new group called PEERS.

The group – Platform for the Exchange of Education, Research and Science – has been set up and will be co-ordinated by dental implants company AstraTech with the support and cooperation of dental professionals from all over the UK. I and Dr Stephen Jacobs were the only Scottish representatives present.

The PEERS group is aimed at forming an association driven by opinion leaders in the implant field.

I was delighted to be one of the 30 specially invited dentists to attend. We are all involved in in dental implant work, education and research to varying degrees.

The first meeting was fantastic with great interaction and participation of all who attended.

I am sure the group will be a tremendous platform for sharing ideas, news and developments about dental implants and their benefits.

Delighted to hear we’ve been shortlisted in the prestigious UK Dentistry Awards – in Best Team and Best Practice categories.

I was named Best Young Dentist (Scotland) at these awards last year.

Fingers crossed – and congratulations to the team.

Colleague Jill and I headed to Edinburgh  for a day long, intensive course on a new and innovative composite teeth filling system which we’re introducing for our patients in the clinic.

The results that can be achieved are, in our view, stunning and we’re taking delivery of the full set of equipment and relevant materials for its use so we can deliver some great results right away.

Thanks to Optident’s Chris Hardie for the invitation and his warm welcome at the Apex Hotel and also to Gregory Brambilla from Italy who shared his expertise with us.

It’s fascinating some of the information on the internet – especially interesting when it focuses on my profession.

Statistics from a new study have uncovered links between when you’re born and what job you’ll do when you’re an adult.

Apparently those born in December are more likely to become dentists. I’m a September baby so I’m an exception!

They discovered that January babes are more likely to become debt collectors!

A February birth appears to increase the chances of being an artist while March babies appear to go on to become pilots.

Meanwhile, April and May are said to have a fairly even spread of professions, births in the summer months mean a much lower chance of becoming a high-earning football player, doctor or dentist.
