Poster time: focus on dental implants

I’m currently in Phoenix, Arizona taking part in a major implant conference and event.

The 27th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Osseointegration is a great opportunity to learn all that’s new in the world of dental implant surgery. Around 4000 people will attend this event with delegates coming from all over the world.

I’m making a poster presentation in one of the sessions. This allows me to network with other dentists from all over the world and share with them my experience of a particular implant case.

US meeting for implant dentists

Busy putting the finishing touches to my poster presentation for next week’s 27th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Osseointegration being held in Phoenix, Arizona.
It’s probably the world’s biggest gathering of those involved in the implant world and delegates meet up to share info on all that’s new.

The theme of this year’s collection of educational sessions and events is “Technology to Practice”.
I’m attending to get a first-hand look at the newest innovations in dental implant technology under one roof. With my special interest in implant treatment this event is an important one in my calendar.

Orthodontics – could they help you?

Our clinic’s specialist orthodontist Andrew McGregor (pictured below) tells us that, according to the British Orthodontist Society, almost 1 MILLION people started orthodontic treatment last year.

Andrew who is based at our Glasgow dental clinic sums why more people opt for the treatment: “Orthodontic treatment is about making the best of your teeth and improving the harmony of your mouth and jaws. Once you are able to bite together correctly, you can eat more comfortably and look after your teeth and gums more easily. And one of the best results of all is that your smile will benefit immensely!”

To achieve the status of specialist Andrew undertook six years of full time post graduate training and was required to pass professional examinations. Like most orthodontic specialists, he treats only orthodontic patients and is therefore best placed to give optimal care and treatment. For more information see the orthodontics section under Our Treatments section of this website. Click here for more.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Vivienne, one of the hygienist team at the clinic, has been busy baking and created these wonderful cupcakes which tasted as good as they looked! We loved her attention to detail with the decorations.

It was her way of marking Valentine’s Day and sharing the good wishes with the rest of the team…

And a very happy and smile-inducing Valentine’s Day to you all too!

Choosing the right composite for patient benefit

We have recently adopted HRi composite as the composite of choice for the clinic.

This is a fantastic material which comes complete with oven to hold the tooth coloured filling material at the perfect temperature for placement and manipulation.

The material provides fantastic results given its proximity to the refractory index of natural enamel.

We welcomed Optident’s Chris Hardy into the clinic the other day for some in-house training on the system. This was follow-up to the 1-2-1 hands on training with Gregory Brambilla.

The results we can produce is superb – and in my view as close to nature as we can achieve at the moment.

We’ll post some results of work we’ve done.

Scanner open night a great success

Our Ewoo 3D scanner open evening held in our clinic for other dental professionals was a great success.

We had 14 guests and superb presentations from Paul Taylor who looks after international training for Ewoo and from our own consultant radiologist Neil Heath who gave an insight into the current requirements for justification of radiation, reporting requirements and the benefits of CBCT scanning in planning implant treatments.

Lots of feedback and interaction on the night – then a further discussion over supper.
This is one of many evenings we’re planning – so we’ll keep you posted on the next batch.

Pam passes dental nurse exams!

Our colleagues Pamela Wood from our Glasgow dental clinic has great cause for celebration today.

She’s just heard she passed her dental nurse examinations! We’re all very pleased about her news as we know how much commitment she’s made to her studies and we’re aware of how hard she worked to achieve that goal.

We’re absolutely delighted for you Pam!

Open evening for referring dentists and other dental professionals

When planning the Glasgow dental clinic, we decided to install the Ewoo Pax Duo Cone Beam CT Scanner. We have been using the system for some 14 months now and have noticed a growing number of referrals for these scans from colleagues who feel its use may benefit the patients under their care.

In addition, with more scans being taken we provide a facility for the reporting of these scans where appropriate – and this is carried out by our consultant colleague Mr Neil Heath.

The Ewoo system has many advantages: the variety of field of view options means that only the areas of interest need be exposed to radiation and the software planning element is superb.

Together with Ewoo and given the success of our previous open evening in June last year, we have organised a CBCT evening in the clinic.  The evening will be relatively informal, free of charge and will comprise a general introduction to CBCT scans in dentistry, followed by valuable input from Mr Neil Heath, Consultant in Dental Radiology, and Mr Paul Taylor from Ewoo. Verifiable CPD certificates will be provided for those in attendance.

The evening is planned for Thurs 2nd Feb from 630-830pm in our clinic at 154 Hyndland Road, Hyndland, Glasgow, G12 9HZ. Please contact 0141 339 7579 to reserve your place .

We hope that this evening will provide an ideal opportunity for referring dentists or colleagues to gain further insight into CBCT scanning in dentistry, commonly detected anomalies and what we should be reporting. In addition, it will be a good informal networking evening with opportunity to discuss any relevant cases.

The importance of disinfection at our clinic: our commitment

Clinical cleanliness and disinfection are of paramount importance to the team here at Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry.

We will wash our hands up to 30 or 40 times – or even more – a day as part of our clinic disinfection regime.

We’re now using a three-pronged regime featuring Schulke soap, cleanser and hand lotion products.

Our commitment underlines the importance we place on our disinfection programme in the Glasgow clinic.
