Smile all white?

One of the 21st century’s biggest advances in dental enhancement is teeth whitening.

At Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry we recommend two options – tray whitening or the Zoom advanced power whitening.

With tray whitening, the patient wears a specially produced close fitting tray into which gentle whitening solution is applied and worn  – at night or for four hours during daytime.

With the Zoom advanced power whitening a 90 minute process is carried out in the surgery using a lamp to activate whitening gel which is applied to your teeth.

The two options can be used separately or as a combination to achieve the best results.

Our hygienist Jen can advise on whitening during a routine hygienist appointment or ask for more information during a consultation. Please contact us by phone or email too if you would like more information about our whitening services.

A further insight

The new clinic renovation is well underway and the specialist tradesmen are hard at work transforming the two-level building.

As it’s a building from a previous century we recognise the extra care and attention we need to pay towards ensuring as much of the old is retained alongside the new.

The building has magnificent cornice work throughout and there are many other traditional architectural features we want to keep in place.

Here’s another image from the “interiors file” which shows the extent of the work we’re facing.

A look inside

Here is an image of the interior of the new clinic BEFORE the work began on its major makeover. As you can see, the workmen have been prepping the interior for the renovation team to being in earnest.

Our plan is to keep you posted on how the project continues – and we’ll post more images.

Working in our current clinic which is only about two minutes” walk away means it’s easy for me to monitor the daily progress.

Straightening technique

I am having a lot of enquiries about the Inman Aligner – and so I’ve posted a video about it here on this blog.

The Inman Aligner is a cost-effective removable orthodontic appliance that moves teeth in a fraction of the time of other systems. It aligns crowded or protruding anterior teeth with two opposing spring loaded aligner bars. This provides gentle but continuous pressure over a large range of movement. Surprisingly, this gentle pressure is the quickest way to move teeth but it also makes treatment very safe and kind to teeth.

People love the speed of treatment and it’s changing the face of dentistry as we know it. The average treatment time is only 4-16 weeks and now with concerns over the economy it’s a more justifiable expense. The Inman Aligner is the greatest innovation in dentistry of recent years. It’s fast, affordable and kind to teeth. It really is the best way to straighten crowded front teeth

Prime ministerial smile

Back in the last century Prime Minister and wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill apparently always carried two spare sets of dentures around – just in case.
It’s reported he had the dentures made to preserve a natural lisp.
One of the sets of partial dentures made for him has just sold at auction for more than £15,000 – such is their “historical significance”.
According to the BBC news website, the auctioneers said the wartime premier suffered from terrible teeth and gums and needed complicated dentistry from childhood.
Churchill valued so highly the skill of his dentist, Wilfred Fish, who worked with the dental technician who crafted his dentures, that he nominated him for a knighthood.
For today’s patient of course there are many other options available if teeth have been lost either through dental problems or accidents.
Bridgework can make a tremendous difference in “filling gaps” and dental implants are particularly effective at preserving – or restoring – a natural look for a patient’s smile.
Patients who wear dentures can also benefit from implant technology – and in doing so ensure the functionality of their teeth is at its maximum.
I have travelled extensively working with some of the world’s leading experts in the world of implants and by doing so I’m able to offer my patients – and those who are referred to me by other dentists – the most up to date techniques and implant products in order to achieve the best results.

A question of space

I’m often asked about the new clinic plans and how the layout will work.
It’s a bit of a Tardis-like building but because it’s spread over the two levels there’s a significant amount of surgery space available for the team.
We’ll have a large lounge and waiting area with reception which will have some very up-to-the-minute technological advances to inform and entertain our patients.
We planned an office for me and for my PA and we’ll have a total of five surgery rooms.
We’ll have two decontamination suites and two storage rooms.
There’s a staff room planned – which is very important.
A communications room which will house the latest computer technology to keep us on track.
And of course we’ll have toilets for patients.
As the building progresses we’ll include photos and update you on how it’s coming along so pop back to the website blog for more information.

Open success

Gaining nationwide TV exposure is a big dream for many and when it happens accidentally – and all down to Scotland’s awful summer weather – then it’s an extra treat!
We had commissioned some specially branded Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry umbrellas – king-size and super-white -  which proved highly popular among patients and friends.
One such patient had been in St Andrews watching the Open golf live when the rain started – again!
Up went his brolly – his Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry one – and for a good minute or so the name was broadcast by the BBC to its TV audience here and further afield.
Every cloud certainly had a silver lining!

Sign of the times

Our new clinic has its new sign in place – but the process to get to that stage wasn’t the easiest.
Despite the many and varied signs and lighting that exist in the neighborhood the current planning rules insist on a new sign being made from a material that was readily available at the time when the building itself was constructed. The rules also prevent us from lighting the sign.
We opted for a highly polished, grade A steel sign which is indeed extremely well polished. It works well in daytime when it’s sunny and at night it “borrows” some of the light from the nearby street lighting.
It’s eye-catching – and we’re very pleased with the result.

Magazine Focus

A couple of weeks back I mentioned I’d been interviewed by the Hyndland Heart magazine team. Well the piece is now out in print and online and here’s a chunk of it…I liked the headline. Many thanks to David and Ruth on the team for their interest…

Filling the Gaps

“Behind the chipboard-covered windows on Hyndland Road, near its corner with Clarence Drive, a quiet revolution in dental care is shaping up. State-of-the-art facilities with the latest developments in dental technology and sterilising techniques are promised, as the interior of a traditional main-door flat is transformed. Planned to open later this year, Philip Friel explains that tailoring a service around his patients’ busy lives has been uppermost in his mind as he plans the new facilities.

So don’t expect anything less than dynamism from this 32 year-old Glasgow University graduate who has, this year, been named by his peers to be among the Top 50 most influential dentists, in a poll published by Dentistry magazine. His position at 26 in the poll makes him the highest-ranking dentist in his field who is based in Scotland. He is particularly recognised as one of Scotland’s finest implant surgeons but also works with people who have experienced sports injuries and other traumas and says that “the difference we can make in improving their lives is significant”.

This passion for dentistry began in his teenage years, as a schoolboy at St Aloysius’ College, and led him to take degrees in anatomy and dental surgery. He now focuses his work on cosmetic dentistry and in particular dental implants. He is also happy to help patients maintain their healthy teeth.”

Local support

FOSP Gala Day June 2010 - photo Jack Breckenridge

We love our location in Glasgow and the clinic was delighted to be able to support the Friends of Old Station Park Gala Day last month.

We footed the bill for some Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry balloons to add colour and decoration to some of the venues for the day’s activties.

Fortunately as this photo by Jack Breckenridge shows, the sun shone and along with all the other ingredients made for a perfect summer’s afternoon.

If you look closely you’ll see our balloons complete with logo!
