WINNING LECTURE

Here Imran tells us what the event was about and the focus of his keynote speech…

“I had been previously awarded the TC White Lecture Award by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and was invited by the British Society for Oral and Dental Research to present my winning lecture earlier this month.

This was the society’s 60th annual meeting hosted by the University of Bristol in the unique town of Bath.

My presentation was called “Computer prediction systems for planning the surgical correction of facial deformities.”

It was about my research undertaken at the University of Glasgow and involves using advanced cone beam CT and surgical predictions to help patient with dento-facial deformities.

We have a similar cone beam CT machine in the Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry Clinic, which we use for all our dental implant, cosmetic, orthodontic and endodontic work.

WELL RECEIVED

These highly specific and specialised machines capture radiographic images in detailed 3D, which allow the dental team at the Glasgow dental clinic to provide advanced dentistry.

I received my certificate and award from Professor Tim Watson who is the President of the British Society for Oral and Dental Research, and from the feedback I’ve had, the lecture was well received.”

Guest blog: Newest team member Imran shares his view on specialist orthodontics

We’re delighted to welcome our newest team member specialist orthodontist Imran Shafi to our Glasgow dental clinic. Imran has penned our August Guest Blog…

“Often we are asked what is the difference between a specialist orthodontist and a dentist that does orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialist branch of dentistry that is concerned with the development and management of irregularities and abnormalities in the teeth and jaws.

The field of orthodontics largely focuses on treatments such as tooth straightening using orthodontic braces or aligners, as well as problems pertaining to the jaw. The aim of orthodontics is to produce a healthy, functioning bite, creating higher resistance to disease processes and improving your personal appearance. Patients find that orthodontic treatment contributes to both their mental and physical wellbeing.

All specialist orthodontists in the UK have undertaken several years of further training after completing their dental degree. Hence they have a strong and broad foundation in general and hospital dentistry. The specialist training programmes are competitively entered and concurrently the orthodontist will have undertaken postgraduate university research to Masters or Doctorate level.

Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry’s orthodontists – I’ve joined Andrew McGregor who’s also based here – are registered on the General Dental Council as specialists.

BEST OPTIONS AND TREATMENTS

Therefore orthodontists have the full training to advise the best options and treatments for their patients. This ranges from simple and swift to complex and gold standard complete correction. As specialists, they know what’s appropriate for you, with current, evidence based knowledge and techniques.

Some general dentists have completed shorter and much less detailed courses in orthodontics and have an interest in the subject. They would have varying levels of expertise and ability in orthodontics.

The decision as to whether to have treatment with a specialist orthodontist or non-specialist is ultimately up to the individual. Cost wise, dentists and orthodontists generally charge the same amount for similar orthodontic treatment. As a patient you get the added benefit of being treated by a specialist when you see a qualified orthodontist.

INTEGRATED TREATMENTS OF THE HIGHEST STANDARD

At Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry we all work closely together with our professional colleagues to provide our patients integrated treatments of the highest standard. This can involve many disciplines from: root treatment; sedation; cosmetic dentistry and dental implants and all supported by our hygienists and dental nurses.

The specialist orthodontists are able to liaise with the team intricately at every stage, which is especially important when our patients are being transferred to or from our orthodontic care. It is imperative that this is undertaken seamlessly and easily for our patients to maintain our practice ethos of advanced dentistry.”

Orthodontic patient gives feedback on treatment: “most impressive”

Regular followers of our Glasgow dental clinic blog will know that we often post testimonials from patients who are happy to share their feedback on the experience of treatment and services we offer here.

Today’s testimonial comes from a lady in her early 20s who opted to see our specialist orthodontist Andrew McGregor (pictured below) for treatment.

Adult orthodontics are more common than many people think and that’s one of the reasons we’re delighted to have a specialist orthodontist on board in our team.

The patient wrote the following:

“Many thanks to Andrew and the team at Philip Friel’s clinic. Despite being generally happy with my teeth, I wanted to discretely fix the few lower teeth that were crossing at the front.

I am so pleased with my decision to use a lingual brace to do so – it did the job very quickly and painlessly!

MOST IMPRESSIVE

Andrew was confident in his abilities which were reassuring throughout the treatment and the same can be said for the nurses who were all lovely.

The few times I needed something fixed on my brace, Philip was able to stand in for Andrew so I was seen as soon as possible. The ability to be so accommodating was most impressive considering how busy the practice is.

All in all, my experience at Philip Friel dentistry can only be described as a pleasure. The stylish practice and the pleasant receptionists only added to the friendly and professional service.

RECOMMEND

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the practice to anybody.”

We’re really grateful to the patient for sharing this feedback.

Glasgow dental implant patient feedback: “…find myself smiling with new-found confidence”.

A 55-year-old female patient has recently undergone dental implant and crown work as well as adult orthodontic treatment at our Glasgow clinic.

She’s written us a testimonial which we’re delighted to receive especially as it’s clear her treatment has helped enormously in her smile makeover – and as she says she’s now smiling with new-found confidence.

We always appreciate the time taken by patients to give us feedback about treatment they’ve had done at the clinic.

Here are this patient’s own words…

“I…find myself smiling with new-found confidence”

“I have just completed a year of treatment at Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry and am absolutely delighted with the results.

“In March 2012, I had my first appointment with Philip to discuss straightening my bottom front teeth and replacing 20-year-old NHS bridge work.

“From the start, I knew I was in excellent hands. Andrew McGregor, orthodontist with Philip Friel, fitted a brace to my lower teeth and within 8 months, I had straight bottom teeth for the first time in my life!

IMPLANTS AND CROWNS

“Meanwhile Philip started work on the upper front teeth. I had decided on 2 implants and 4 crowns rather than a replacement bridge.

“Throughout all treatment, I received superb care and friendly, professional advice – all in very pleasant, state-of-the-art surroundings. When I look at the “then and now” photos, I barely recognise myself and find myself smiling with new-found confidence.”
