Team festive outing

The dental clinic team donned our gladrags and headed out on Saturday for a festive lunch party in the centre of Glasgow.

Eighteen of us got together for some relaxed downtime and enjoyed the chance to catch up in a non-clinic environment.

Carly our PA had organised our ‘Secret Santa’ gift swap which went down a treat with the team.

Among the more unusual gifts – purchased to a strict £20 budget – were a tin of multi-flavoured Vaseline lip balms, a fake fur headband, selection of scented candles and a support bandage!
Santa had been very creative for the team!

How a playground incident led to many decades of dental despair – a patient’s story

Dental trauma during childhood can have a lifelong impact for many patients we see at our dental Glasgow clinic.

Here we have the story of one patient – a male in his early 50s – who charts the details of what happened after a school playground incident and how it impacted on his ability and desire to smile.

Cosmetic dentistry techniques can make a huge difference in terms of what can be achieved and the benefits from an aesthetic as well as functional perspective.

Read the patient’s story about his smile makeover – in his own words.

“For over 30 years I have avoided smiling too much thanks to a school playground fight and subsequent loss of a front tooth. This and a general neglect over the years left me very doubtful about offering a grin to camera.

Dentists were not my favourite profession and in a job which involves a lot of public work, this problem became more and more troublesome.

“Comprehensive overhaul”

Philip Friel was the first dentist I had encountered who undertook a comprehensive overhaul of my smile and forward assessment of my dental prospects. He sought to correct some bad dentistry I had encountered over the years and took a very positive approach to what was possible.

More importantly, he assessed the likely outcome to my bite and teeth generally if I continued as I was, and the prospect was not comforting.

Philip laid out a programme of treatment which involved a number of different aspects, from root treatments to new crowns, and which now offers me the opportunity to maximise my natural smile and bite for as long as possible. He stopped the rot of bad treatment in the past and produced a workable solution for me. Most importantly, Philip introduced me to the idea of dental implants and successfully carried out three implants. For the first time in over 30 years I have a natural smile that looks right, which isn‘t liable to chafe or slip or fall out or look false.

All carried out efficiently and professionally and with good provision of reasons and descriptions along the way.”

This patient’s words are important because they explain the transformation he underwent from being reluctant to even grin – never mind smile – to having what he labels a “natural smile”.

Liz Glass, dentist and dental surgeon

Philip on stage

The team here is keen on professional/personal development and many of us attend courses, study for exams or go to seminars and lectures in pursuit of more and advanced knowledge about our great profession.

As you can imagine the research and studies being carried out into dental work, implant surgery and cosmetic dentistry advances change by the day so we all like to aim at being up to date with our knowledge and experience.

So we’re delighted to congratulate one of our dentists, Liz Glass, who’s just passed the first stage of the The Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties exam.

Liz was candidate number 854. She sits the second part at the end of May in Leeds.

Relying less on traditional tests of knowledge and more on workplace-based demonstration of competencies, the MJDF provides a modern, innovative assessment for today’s dentist. You can read more about it here

Implant patient writes feedback: new tooth ‘unrecognisable’ from its neighbour!

We appreciate getting feedback from our patients and today a lady wrote in about the dental implant work that we’d carried out at our Glasgow clinic.

Here are her own words…

“Just a quick note to thank you for my new implanted front tooth!
After many years of various surgeries at varying dentistry practices (one in the US!!), you have finally succeeded in giving me a tooth that is unrecognisable from its neighbour!!!

The treatment I received from yourself was second to none. Not forgetting Kasia and Siobhan and Karyn on Reception, the whole experience was totally professional and made bearable (if that’s the correct word) by the relaxed atmosphere from the minute I entered the door of your Practice. It was great from my point of view to at last have a Dentist with whom I could discuss issues in a relaxed manner.

Many thanks once again – and looking forward to seeing everyone when I come in for my check-up. (I can’t believe I’m looking forward to visiting the Dentist!!!)

We thank her for taking the time to communicate her feedback to the team.

Nominations received in The Dental Awards 2012

We’ve just received the news that we’ve  been shortlisted in The Dental Awards 2012 in the following categories…

Practice of the Year (North)
Dentist of the Year (North)

Awards ceremony planned for April in London. Will keep you posted.

Delighted – especially for the team’s efforts in securing Practice of the Year nomination.

It’s always appreciated when the team’s efforts are recognised by our peers from the dental professional world who judge these awards.

Poster time: focus on dental implants

I’m currently in Phoenix, Arizona taking part in a major implant conference and event.

The 27th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Osseointegration is a great opportunity to learn all that’s new in the world of dental implant surgery. Around 4000 people will attend this event with delegates coming from all over the world.

I’m making a poster presentation in one of the sessions. This allows me to network with other dentists from all over the world and share with them my experience of a particular implant case.

Choosing the right composite for patient benefit

We have recently adopted HRi composite as the composite of choice for the clinic.

This is a fantastic material which comes complete with oven to hold the tooth coloured filling material at the perfect temperature for placement and manipulation.

The material provides fantastic results given its proximity to the refractory index of natural enamel.

We welcomed Optident’s Chris Hardy into the clinic the other day for some in-house training on the system. This was follow-up to the 1-2-1 hands on training with Gregory Brambilla.

The results we can produce is superb – and in my view as close to nature as we can achieve at the moment.

We’ll post some results of work we’ve done.

Scanner open night a great success

Our Ewoo 3D scanner open evening held in our clinic for other dental professionals was a great success.

We had 14 guests and superb presentations from Paul Taylor who looks after international training for Ewoo and from our own consultant radiologist Neil Heath who gave an insight into the current requirements for justification of radiation, reporting requirements and the benefits of CBCT scanning in planning implant treatments.

Lots of feedback and interaction on the night – then a further discussion over supper.
This is one of many evenings we’re planning – so we’ll keep you posted on the next batch.

Open evening for referring dentists and other dental professionals

When planning the Glasgow dental clinic, we decided to install the Ewoo Pax Duo Cone Beam CT Scanner. We have been using the system for some 14 months now and have noticed a growing number of referrals for these scans from colleagues who feel its use may benefit the patients under their care.

In addition, with more scans being taken we provide a facility for the reporting of these scans where appropriate – and this is carried out by our consultant colleague Mr Neil Heath.

The Ewoo system has many advantages: the variety of field of view options means that only the areas of interest need be exposed to radiation and the software planning element is superb.

Together with Ewoo and given the success of our previous open evening in June last year, we have organised a CBCT evening in the clinic.  The evening will be relatively informal, free of charge and will comprise a general introduction to CBCT scans in dentistry, followed by valuable input from Mr Neil Heath, Consultant in Dental Radiology, and Mr Paul Taylor from Ewoo. Verifiable CPD certificates will be provided for those in attendance.

The evening is planned for Thurs 2nd Feb from 630-830pm in our clinic at 154 Hyndland Road, Hyndland, Glasgow, G12 9HZ. Please contact 0141 339 7579 to reserve your place .

We hope that this evening will provide an ideal opportunity for referring dentists or colleagues to gain further insight into CBCT scanning in dentistry, commonly detected anomalies and what we should be reporting. In addition, it will be a good informal networking evening with opportunity to discuss any relevant cases.

Congratulations to Jamie: focus helps relax anxious Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry patients

Congratulations to our colleague Jamie Maguire who has just passed his diploma in conscious sedation.

Dental conscious sedation is a technique whereby a sedative medication is used to relax and sedate patients at our Glasgow dental clinic who are very anxious of receiving dental treatment. We see many patients who are extremely concerned about visits to the dentist and indeed can be phobic about the experience.

Jamie is a key part of our team and enables us to deliver the best possible outcomes by our superb team approach especially for those patients who are apprehensive about treatment. It means they can receive advanced dental care to achieve the optimum in oral health.

Jamie Maguire has a focus on sedation for patients at Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry in Glasgow.
